The Playground Operas

Help us reach our 2018 goal of raising $33,000 for the Playground Opera program by making a donation today!

The Playground Operas program is a school day program that immerses students in the creation, production and performance of an opera. With the guidance of professionals working in the field today, students explore the operatic experience from the first moment of an opera's creation to the exciting culmination of its performance. The stage? Their own schoolyard playground.

Updates

This year's opera is Hansel & Gretel. Your contribution will support the fantastic work of our teaching artists, directors, designers, arrangers, and performers who have already dedicated so much time and energy to making our Playground Opera program a huge success.

Thank you for your support!

“It was a lot of work, but I still loved it. That was amazing. I want to do it all the time. That was the best time of my life. I love it, and if you don’t, I don’t care.” -Khimani Christian, 3rd Grader, PS 129/ West Harlem

ROADWORKS

We focus on new works that are immersive, innovative, boundary-pushing, entertaining and accessible to a large population with a focus on American personalities and American culture (sometimes pop culture).

HISTORY:
The program began in 2012 with our first commission and fully produced opera, SMASHED: The Carrie Nation Story by composer James Barry and librettist Timothy Braun. SMASHED premiered in 2013 at HERE Arts Center and enjoyed a very successful run at the New York International Fringe Festival in August, 2014. We performed to sold-out audiences and were one of 16 productions selected to take part in the Fringe Encore Series at the Soho Playhouse's Huron Club in September 2014.

Currently, we are developing three new operas:
The Parksville Murders by Kamala Sankaram and Jerre Dye- An episodic horror opera for VR
The Inner Circle, by Daniel Felsenfeld and Kate Gale- An opera based on the life and work of Dr. Alfred Kinsey, A.K.A Dr. Sex
Murder!, by Kamala Sankaram and Rob Reese- An immersive comic murder mystery opera designed for house parties
